As part of Mansoura University’s commitment to promoting applied learning and linking theoretical knowledge with clinical practice, fourth-year students made three visits to the intensive care units at both the University’s main hospital and Mansoura International Hospital. These visits were conducted as part of the course “Pharmacotherapy of Critical Care Patients,” under the patronage of Prof. Dr. Mohamed Abdel-Azim, President of the University, and led by Prof. Dr. Ahmed El-Sheikh, Director of the PharmD Clinical Pharmacy Program, and supervised by Dr. Mona El-Tamlawi, Dr. Basant Maher, Dr. Samar Douidar, Dr. Amira Bahaa, and Dr. Rawan Kamel, members of the faculty and teaching assistants for the course.
The visit aimed to provide students with the opportunity to experience the real-world work environment within intensive care units and gain firsthand knowledge of the mechanisms for managing critical cases, including medication protocols, monitoring vital signs, and assessing patients’ response to treatment, as well as understanding the role of the clinical pharmacist within the multidisciplinary medical team.
The visit included tours of the intensive care units, where the process of making treatment decisions in critical cases was explained, such as infection management, the use of broad-spectrum antibiotics, handling shock cases, and supporting vital functions. The importance of adjusting drug dosages for patients with special conditions, such as renal or hepatic impairment, was also highlighted, as this enhances patient safety and reduces complications.
The visit saw significant engagement from the students, as they had the opportunity to ask questions and discuss real-world cases with doctors and pharmacists within the units, which helped enhance their clinical reasoning skills and directly link academic concepts to practical application
